Jaye, Dash take down first-place Pelicans
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 14, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash opened up a six-game homestand with a 5-2 win over the first-place Myrtle Beach Pelicans Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
It was the Pelicans (24-14) who scored the game's first run. After retiring the first two he faced, righty Myles Jaye (1-0) gave up a single to Rougned Odor, who stole second and then scored on a single by Trever Adams.
Winston-Salem (18-19) would even things up in the third inning against Myrtle Beach starter Luke Jackson (4-2). Martin Medina led the inning off with a single, moved to third on a pair of errors and came home on a single by Jeremy Farrell.
Jaye settled in after giving up that first-inning tally, retiring the next 10 Pelicans he faced. Myrtle Beach loaded the bases with nobody down in the fifth against the righty, but the newly-promoted Jaye got a double play grounder and only surrendered one run. He left after six, striking out six and turning in a quality start in his first career High-A outing.
Winston-Salem would get Jaye the lead for the first time in the bottom of the fifth. Joey DeMichele started the inning with a double to left-center field, and Farrell drew a walk. One out and a passed ball later, the Dash had two in scoring position for Kevan Smith. Smith delivered the tying run with a groundout, and after a Mark Haddow walk, Grant Buckner laced a single to left, giving the Dash the lead. One batter later, Mark Tracy clubbed a two-run double to right to push the margin to the three.
The Dash bullpen would take it from there. J.R. Ballinger entered for the seventh and tossed a scoreless inning, and Max Peterson struck out four in his two innings of work to slam the door and earn his third save.
The Dash and Pelicans continue this three-game set on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Righty Chris Bassitt (4-0, 1.71 ERA) will toe the rubber for Winston-Salem, while Myrtle Beach will counter with southpaw Victor Payano (3-2, 4.29 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:45 with the Pregame Dash, and first pitch is set for 7.
The Dash expect to reach their one millionth fan at BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, May 16. On the night the Dash reach this milestone, one lucky fan will have be given a chance to win one million dollars. Visit wsdash.com to purchase tickets for this historic event.
