Fryer slam helps power Wings to win

Rookie Albers sharp on mound again
May 17, 2013

Andrew Albers turned in another outstanding pitching performance, and Eric Fryer's grand slam helped boost the Red Wings to a 11-6 win over the Durham Bulls Friday night at Frontier Field. Coming up next: The Pepsi MAX Field of Dreams game, featuring Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Johnny Bench and other Major League Baseball Legends, takes place at Frontier Field Saturday at 6:05 p.m.

Rookie left-hander Albers brought an 0-2 record over his last three starts into Friday's game - despite having allowed only two earned runs in 18 1/3 innings. The Wings had scored just three runs combined for Albers in those starts.

Albers (1-2) had an effective first inning, using just 12 pitches to strike out the top of the Durham lineup. The Bulls' Jim Paduch, pressed into action as a starter after scheduled starter Alex Torres was promoted to the big leagues, had an equally effective 12-pitch first inning to retire the Wings in order.

Rochester quickly had a scoring chance in the second inning, when Chris Colabello led off with a double down the right field line. The hit extended Colabello's hitting streak to nine games. With one out, Eric Farris drew a walk, and Doug Bernier followed with a single to bring home Colabello for a 1-0 Wings lead. Paduch walked Joe Benson to load the bases, then Fryer belted a grand slam over the left field wall to make it 5-0 Rochester.

After the offensive outburst from the Wings in the second inning, both offenses went silent as Albers and and Paduch (1-3) mowed down hitters. In the sixth inning, Paduch was replaced by Austin Hubbard, who flew in to Rochester just hours before the game to make his Triple-A debut. The Wings spoiled his debut as the first five batters of the inning reached base, igniting what became another five-run rally for Rochester. Antoan Richardson, Ray Olmedo and Colabello all recorded at least one RBI in the inning to push the Red Wings' lead to 10-0 after six innings.

Albers allowed a one-out single in the top of the seventh inning and, after throwing 108 pitches on the night, was subsequently replaced by Luis Perdomo. Albers finished the game with 6 1/3 innings pitched, scattering five hits and striking out six while surrendering no runs.

After Perdomo escaped the top of the seventh inning unscathed, Jeff Clement hit an RBI ground-rule double in the bottom half of the inning to increase the Wings' lead to 11-0.

The Bulls finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning agains Perdomo, scoring six runs with two outs. Brandon Guyer's two-run triple was the key hit for Durham. Shairon Martis came out of the bullpen to relieve Perdomo.
