Cory Rasmus Recalled by Atlanta
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Atlanta Braves have announced the recall of right-hander Cory Rasmus from Triple-A Gwinnett, effective on Saturday, May 18. Rasmus joins the Braves' 25-man roster as a replacement for left-hander Eric O'Flaherty, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow strain.
Rasmus, 25, is set to make his Major League debut with Atlanta after spending 19 games with the Gwinnett Braves this season. The right-hander was impressive in his first Triple-A stint, going 1-1 with a bullpen-best 0.93 ERA (2 ER in 19.1 IP) and seven saves in seven opportunities. He's currently tied for the International League lead in appearances (19) and ranks third among IL relievers in opponent batting average (.123).
Selected in the supplemental first round by the Braves in the 2006 June draft out of Russell County High School (Seale, AL), Rasmus is 15-22 with a 3.67 ERA (120 ER in 294.1 IP) and 17 saves in 125 career Minor League outings, including 35 starts. He is the younger brother of Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Colby Rasmus.
When Rasmus pitches, he will be the first member of this year's Gwinnett roster to make a Major League debut. He'll join infielders Blake DeWitt and Tyler Pastornicky and right-hander David Carpenter as non-rehab G-Braves to be recalled by Atlanta this season.
