Winston whacks Salem, wins fourth straight

Dash score in five frames, toss a three-hitter
May 21, 2013

SALEM, VA (MAY 21, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash started off their six-game road trip by rattling off their fourth consecutive win, drubbing the Salem Red Sox 11-1 Tuesday night at LewisGale Field.

The Dash (22-21) have matched a season-long winning streak. Winston also mustered four straight wins from April 17-20. This thumping of Salem marked the Dash's second largest victory of the campaign.

After a scoreless first inning on both sides, Winston-Salem tallied the contest's first runs in the second. Jeremy Farrell got things started with a leadoff double. Later in the frame, Mark Haddow walked and Rangel Ravelo singled to load the bases. Mark Tracy plated two with a double to left, but Ravelo was thrown out trying to score on the play. Still, Winston enjoyed an early 2-0 edge.

The Red Sox (19-23) would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half against Winston starter Chris Bassitt (5-1). Brandon Jacobs got the frame started with a double, and a Carson Blair single got Salem on the board.

The Dash would tack on to their lead in the third against Salem starter William Cuevas (1-5). Joey DeMichele started the inning with a walk, went to second on an error and then stole third. With one down Chris Curley brought him around with a single to restore the two-run advantage. Cuevas then hit Farrell and Kevan Smith to load the bases. With two down, Ravelo continued his recent hot streak with a bases clearing double, giving him back-to-back three-RBI efforts.

That would be all the offense that Bassitt would need. The righty rebounded well after his roughest outing of the season, surrendering just the second-inning tally while working six frames. The win now gives Bassitt five on the season, tying him for the Carolina League lead with Carolina's Cody Anderson.

Winston added two more runs in the sixth when Grant Buckner got in on the act with an RBI triple, and Farrell hit his third double of the night to drive home another run.

Farrell was not done. In the eighth, the third baseman blasted a two-run homer, his seventh of the campaign, to give him three RBIs on the night and 32 on the season.

Yoandy Barroso finished off the scoring with an RBI single in the ninth, making him the sixth different Winston hitter to drive in at least one run on the night.

The Dash and Red Sox continue their three-game series Wednesday night at LewisGale Field. Winston-Salem right-hander Chris Beck (2-6, 2.80 ERA) will face Salem southpaw Henry Owens (3-1, 3.35 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:50 with the Pregame Dash and first pitch is set for 7:05.

The Dash's next homestand begins on Memorial Day, Monday May 27, as they open up a five-game series against the Frederick Keys. For tickets, visit wsdash.com.
