Lookouts Walk-Off over Smokies on Unearned Run
CHATTANOOGA, TN. - For the second straight game, the Chattanooga Lookouts won in walk-off fashion as they scored an unearned run in the 11th inning to defeat the Tennessee Smokies 5-4 in the series finale at AT&T Field. The Smokies finish their ten-game road trip 7-3 but fall to 4.5 games back of first place in the Southern League's North Division.
After losing last night on a walk-off wild pitch, the Smokies lost again due to a defensive lapse. With runners on first and second with two outs, reliever Frank Batista threw a wild pitch. Rafael Ynoa broke for third base and catcher Jay Fernandez's throw went into left field and allowed Ynoa to score the game-winning run.
The Smokies hopped on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning against spot starter Kyle Cofield. Matt Szczur led off with a double and scored from third base on an RBI groundout from Rubi Silva for a 1-0 Smokies lead.
Chattanooga (18-27) responded with three runs to take the lead in the bottom of the first. Brian Cavazos-Galvez connected with a three-run home run, his second of the season, to put the Lookouts in front 3-1.
Cavazos-Galvez picked up his fourth RBI of the night in the bottom of the 5th inning with a two-out, RBI single that scored Joc Pederson and extended Chattanooga's advantage to 4-1.
Tennessee (23-21) got a run back in the top of the 7th inning. Silva tallied his second RBI of the night by lining a single to left field that plated Elliot Soto to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Smokies had runners on second and third base with two outs but Christian Villanueva bounced out to shortstop to end the inning.
A two-run rally in the top of the 8th by the Smokies knotted up the game at 4-4. Tennessee loaded the bases with one out and Jose Dominguez uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Tim Torres to score from third to bring the Smokies within one. Ronald Torreyes then brought in Jonathan Mota with an RBI groundout to tie the game.
The Smokies return home to begin a five-game series with the Huntsville Stars Thursday at 7:15 ET. Tennessee sends right-hander Kyle Hendricks (3-2, 2.82) to the mound against Huntsville righty Jimmy Nelson (5-2, 3.04) at AT&T Field.
