Suns To Wear Camo Jerseys Tonight
With their series even at 1-1, the Jacksonville Suns and Birmingham Barons are scheduled to face off once again at Bragan Field tonight in the third game of the series at 7:05 p.m. Tonight's game will air local television in Jacksonville in high definition on CW17.
The Barons squared up the five-game set with a 5-3 victory last night, led by infielder Dan Black's four-hit game. Jacksonville did not lose any ground to the Mississippi Braves in the Southern League's South Division, as the Braves dropped a 6-2 decision to the Mobile BayBears.
It's another busy Saturday evening scheduled at the Baseball Grounds, with the Suns wearing Digital Blue Camo Jerseys to Salute the Navy on this Memorial Day Weekend. The jerseys will be auctioned off during the contest to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. In addition, all kids through the gates tonight will receive a jersey of their own, a replica Suns jersey of catcher J.T. Realmuto.
Elvis Himselvis will again be at Bragan Field serenading fans with special performances throughout the night, while fans can also take advantage of the Steak Me Out to the Ball Game offer. For only $25, fans get a tender eight ounce bacon-wrapped filet mognon, baked potation, salad and non-alcoholic beverage in the Sundowner Lounge, as well as a General Admission ticket. Before the game, join the Suns to cheer on the Miracle League baseball teams as they play ball with the Suns' players.
The Bloodmobile will also be out in front of the Baseball Grounds and the Suns encourage all fans to donate blood. The first 25 donors receive two tickets to the game, a hotdog and soda voucher, as well as a special Suns gift.
The Suns are expected to send RHP Bryan Evans (0-1, 21.00 ERA) to the mound tonight in the third game of the series. Evans looks to bounce back after suffering the loss in his first outing of the season after allowing seven earned runs on ten hits in three innings pitched.
Set to oppose Evans tonight for Birmingham is RHP Erik Johnson (3-2, 2.44 ERA). The right-hander in his most recent start earned the win at Jackson on May 18 after yielding a lone earned run on six hits, adding four strikeouts in 6.1 frames.
Fans can listen to the game on the Suns Baseball Network, with the "Voice of the Suns" Roger Hoover entering his second season as Jacksonville's Director of Broadcasting. Hoover is assisted by Matt Leland and Andrew Green. Leland and Green will host the UF & Shands Suns Pregame Show beginning at 6:50 p.m. ET on the Suns Baseball Network.
Below are more notes on tonight's game, direct from the official Suns game notes compiled by Roger Hoover. The entire game notes for tonight's contest can be viewed by clicking here.
Half Game Back: The Jacksonville Suns enter today's game only a half game back of the Mississippi Braves for first place in the Southern League South Division Standings. Jacksonville won its critical series against Mississippi by taking three out of five games at Trustmark Park earlier this week, winning the rubber match on Tuesday 5-2. Jacksonville has fewer losses than Mississippi, however the Suns have played three fewer games than the M-Braves due to the postponed game in Pensacola in mid-April and two games were cancelled in Jackson earlier this month, meaning Jacksonville will play no more than 68 games in the first half of the season. The Suns and Braves will not play again in the first half, and won't see each other until the season's final series at Bragan Field.
Suns on Television: The Jacksonville Suns are back on television in Jacksonville, with Saturday and Sunday's games airing in live high definition on Jacksonville's CW17. This will be the third and fourth games of 11 this season that the Suns will air on television this year, with Suns broadcaster Roger Hoover teaming up with Suns President and Owner Peter Bragan, Jr., for the broadcasts.
Yelich Tops in Slugging Percentage: Suns outfielder Christian Yelich leads the Southern League in slugging percentage with a .600 mark in his 30 games played with Jacksonville. Yelich has six homers, five triples, and 10 doubles in 2013, in attrition to his 26 RBI in 30 games played. Yelich is also fifth in the league in home runs per at-bats, averaging a round-tripper every 20.83 at-bats. Yelich is the number two prospect in the Marlins organization according to Baseball America, and was drafted by the Marlins in the first round of the 2010 draft.
Fans in Force on Friday: The Jacksonville Suns welcomed in their largest crowd of the 2013 season on Friday night, as 8,490 fans made their way through the turnstiles at Bragan Field. The crowd was the largest of any Southern League team on Friday by over 2,000 fans, and the Suns are second in the league by averaging 4,745 fans per game at Bragan Field through the first 22 openings. The Suns have played winning baseball in Jacksonville this year, going 13-9 in games played at Bragan Field. After the Birmingham series concludes on Monday, the Suns will be away for a five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos from Tuesday through Saturday, but the Suns will be back at home on Sunday May 2, welcoming in the Mobile BayBears for a five-game series lasting through Thursday May 6.
Tonight's broadcast will air on the Suns Baseball Network's flagship station 94.1 Classic Rock WSOS-FM, plus the Suns' mobile app. Click the link below to listen live online.
