Trebelhorn returns for Volcanoes

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have announced that Tom Trebelhorn will return for a second season as the team's manager.

In 2008, "Treb" led the Volcanoes to their third consecutive Northwest League Western Division Title with a record of 40-36.

Trebelhorn, aPortland native and graduate of Cleveland High School and Portland State University, is entering his 40th year of professional baseball as a player, coach and manager. He managed in the major leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs, was named American League Manager of the Year in 1987 by Baseball America and Sports Illustrated. He spent eleven years as a major league coach, with the Baltimore Orioles, before joining the Volcanoes. The Volcanoes are thrilled to have Treb back in a Volcanoes uniform.

The Volcanoes welcome new pitching coach Brian Cooper to their staff in 2009. Cooper mentored the pitchers of the Giants' Arizona Rookie League team in 2008 to an Arizona League Championship! Cooper was drafted by the California Angels in the 4th round of the 1994 draft and spent 6 seasons in the Major Leagues with his best season coming in 2000. Cooper played in the Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago White Sox systems before signing as a free agent with the San Francisco Giants in 2004. Cooper retired as a player in 2005.

Keizer native Ricky Ward once again returns as the Volcanoes Hitting Coach. Ward joined the Volcanoes during the 2005 season, and has been here each year since. Ricky was raised in Portland, graduating from Roosevelt High School. He played shortstop at Chemeketa Community College in 1989 and 1990 prior to signing with the Giants. He played for the Giants in Everett, Washington, Clinton, Iowa and San Jose, California. Ward then signed with Minnesota in 1994, and joined their AA affiliate in Nashville until a serious knee injury ended his career. He entered coaching at the University of Portland in 2002, and was on the Western Oregon University staff from 2003-2005.
