Brevard blanked 3-0 in Clearwater

May 28, 2013

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees managed just five hits as they were shutout for the fifth time this season in a 3-0 loss to the Clearwater Threshers in Tuesday night's series opener at Bright House Field.

The 'Tees (27-23) faced off against three-time Major League All-Star Carlos Zambrano as he got the start on the mound for the Threshers (25-25).

Brevard County recorded three hits off of Zambrano and drew two walks, but the Manatees could only get one runner in scoring position against him in his 4.1 innings of work.

For the Manatees, southpaw Brent Suter (3-3, 3.44) entered the game allowed just one run in each of his last three starts.

Clearwater would plate their first run off of Suter in the second as Chris Serritella, who reached on a one-out double, came around to score one batter later as Jose Mojica singled to left.

The Threshers scored two more runs against Suter in the bottom of the fifth as Aaron Altherr doubled to left to bring home both Kyrell Hudson and Jonathan Roof.

Suter's night would be done after six innings as he allowed eight hits, the most in his six starts with Brevard. He walked just one, but recorded just one strikeout, which is his lowest total in a game with the 'Tees this year.

Chad Pierce relieved Suter and kept Brevard County in the game as he extended his scoreless innings streak to 18.1 as he blanked Clearwater for two frames.

After the Manatees' offense went down in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth, Brevard started a two-out rally in the ninth.

Both Cody Hawn and Yadiel Rivera singled to put the potential tying run at the plate, in the form of Brandon Macias. Macias though would go down swinging against Luis Garcia to end the game.

Greg Hopkins was the only Manatee with a multi-hit night as he went 2-for-4. Hopkins is hitting .317 (13-for-41) in ten games so far against the Threshers this season.

It will be a quick turnaround for Brevard County and Clearwater as the two teams will square off in a Wednesday matinee at 1:00 p.m. at Bright House Field.

Southpaw Jed Bradley (3-2, 5.45) will get the ball for the 'Tees as he looks to bounce back from his last outing, in which he allowed a career-high eight runs.

For the Threshers, right-hander Perci Garner (4-0, 2.32) will toe the rubber. Garner has yet to face Brevard this season, but he was 2-0 with a 4.60 ERA in three starts against the 'Tees last season.
