Brandon Beachy Leads Braves Past Charleston
ROME, GA - Major leaguer Brandon Beachy made a rehab start with the Rome Braves on Wednesday and led the Braves to victory over the Charleston RiverDogs 3-0 at State Mutual Stadium in South Atlantic League action.
With the loss, the RiverDogs fall to 30-20 overall and for the time being remain in first place in the Southern Division standings. With the victory, Rome improves to 27-23 and remains in fifth place in the Southern Division standings.
Beachy (1-0) went five innings and allowed no runs on three hits to earn the victory. He struckout three and walked one. It was Beachy's second rehab appearance, but first with the Rome Braves. Last week Beachy rehabbed with the Gwinnett Braves, the Atlanta Braves Triple-A affiliate, as he hopes to return to the Atlanta Braves sometime in the next month.
Beachy was relieved by Frank LaFreniere to start the sixth inning, and LaFreniere did not skip a beat. LaFreniere went four innings and allowed no runs on no hits and hit a batter to earn the save, his first of the year.
All three runs for Rome came in the third inning. After a groundout to start the inning, Ronald Luna reached on a double and scored on the next at-bat which was an RBI double by Josh Elander. Casey Kalenkosky was then hit by a pitch, and then Carlos Franco singled home Josh Elander for the second run of the game. Later in the inning, Felix Marte singled in Kalenkosky for the final run of the game. Carlos Franco tried scoring from second on the Marte single, but was thrown out at home to end the inning.
RiverDogs starter Luis Niebla (2-1) went five innings and allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out five and hitting one batter to take the loss. Niebla was replaced to start the sixth by Daniel Camarena who tossed three shutout innings in relief.
Offensively it was a rough day for the RiverDogs as they managed just three hits and five total baserunners. Charleston was sat down 1-2-3 in innings four through nine.
