Wood is the 13th M-Brave to receive a direct promotion to Atlanta from Mississippi
May 30, 2013

PEARL, MS -- Alex Wood has been promoted to the Atlanta Braves, becoming the 13th Mississippi Braves player to receive a promotion directly to Atlanta from Double-A Mississippi. In 10 starts for the M-Braves this season, Wood posted a record of 4-2 with a Southern League leading 1.26 ERA.

The 22-year-old southpaw is the first M-Brave called to the show directly from Mississippi since current A-Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons received the same call on May 31, 2012. Wood is now one of more than 75 former Mississippi Braves to make it to the big leagues and the sixth former M-Brave called up this season.

Wood strung together a new Mississippi Braves record of 19.1 innings pitched without allowing a run. The scoreless streak ran from April 12 through May 3 and broke Tommy Hanson's record of 17.2 scoreless innings, set August 4-16, 2008. Wood continued his streak of innings pitched without an earned run through May 14, ending that streak at 33.2 innings.

At the time of his promotion, the Charlotte, NC, native was leading the Southern League in ERA (1.26) and ranked second in WHIP (0.98) and third in opponent's batting average (.195). Wood was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week, April 22-28. During that span, the lefty went 1-0 and did not allow a run in 11 frames. He gave up nine hits, walked two and struck out 14.

Wood entered the 2013 season ranked as the sixth-best (MLB.com) and seventh-best (Baseball America) prospect in the Atlanta Braves farm system. He was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the second round (85th overall) of the 2012 draft out of the University of Georgia. Wood made his professional debut with Low-A Rome. He went 4-3 with a 2.22 ERA in 13 starts last year. He was also a non-roster invitee to big league camp this season.

With the Georgia Bulldogs, Wood finished his collegiate career with a record of 13-10 and a 3.57 ERA in 32 games, 30 starts (204.1 IP, 180 K, 47 BB). During the 2012 season at Georgia, the redshirt sophomore posted a 2.73 ERA in 16 games, the best by any Georgia starter in 24 seasons (Dave Fleming, 2.08 in 1989).

The Mississippi Braves (29-23) continue a five-game series through Saturday against the Montgomery Biscuits (26-26). Game three is slated for 7:00 PM Thursday night. Gates open at 6:00 PM. It's Thirsty Thursday at Trustmark Park along with Tri-County Chamber Night and Alumni House at Trustmark Park Couponing Night.

The Mississippi Braves is the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Since making the move from Greenville, SC, in 2005, over 70 M-Braves have gone on to play in the big leagues. The M-Braves have made postseason play twice and went on to win the Southern League Championship in 2008. Tickets are available online, at the Trustmark Park Box Office or by calling 888-BRAVES4.
