Adam Ties Strikeout Record in Loss
SPRINGDALE, Ark. -- Northwest Arkansas Naturals starting pitcher Jason Adam tied the franchise record with 11 strikeouts in a game, but the Corpus Christi Hooks limited the Naturals to three hits as they completed a three-game sweep with a 5-0 win on Thursday night.
Adam recorded strikeouts in all but one inning and struck out the side in the sixth inning. The Hooks got on the board with Jiovanni Mier's two-out double in the third, with Mier scoring on a Rene Garcia single to give the Hooks a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
George Springer hit his 16th home run in the sixth, a solo home run to left with two outs. Erik Castro led off the seventh inning with his fifth home run, with the Hooks adding another run in the eighth.
Orlando Calixte went two-for-three, reaching on singles on the fourth and ninth innings. Calixte hit a one-out single in the ninth and advanced to third on a Rey Navarro single to give the Naturals runners at first and third with one out, but Carlos Quevedo struck out Matt Fields and Yem Prades to end the game.
Jake Buchanan earned his sixth win of the year. Buchanan allowed one run with four strikeouts in five innings. Quevedo recorded his first save, allowing two hits with one walk and four strikeouts in four innings.
Adam is the tough-luck loser, allowing four runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts in seven innings. Edwin Carl allowed one run on two hits in two-thirds of an innings, while Jon Keck didn't allow a hit in 1.1 innings.
The Naturals will welcome the San Antonio Missions for the first of a three-game series tomorrow night. Danny Duffy will make his second Major League rehab start for the Naturals. Jose De Paula (3-5, 3.60) is the scheduled starter for the Missions.
