Reds 2012 First Round Pick Nick Travieso Joins Dragons

Bender Returns to Dayton
May 31, 2013

DAYTON, OHIO-The Dayton Dragons announced the following roster changes today:

Right-handed pitcher Nick Travieso and left-handed pitcher Joel Bender have been promoted to Dayton from the Cincinnati Reds extended spring training camp in Goodyear, Arizona.

Right-handed pitcher Sal Romano has been placed on the disabled list with a bruised foot.

Right-handed pitcher Austin Salter has been sent from Dayton to the Cincinnati Reds extended spring training camp.

The Dragons roster currently stands at the Midwest League limit of 25 players.

Travieso will make his Midwest League debut as the Dragons starting pitcher on Monday night vs. the Lake County Captains at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons roster now includes the Reds' top selections in each of the past two drafts. Travieso (trav-ee-ESS-so) was the 14th overall selection in 2012 draft while Robert Stephenson was the Reds' first round pick in 2011. Travieso played at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, Florida near Ft. Lauderdale.

Travieso becomes the 10th first round draft pick to play for the Dragons in their 14-year history (not including supplemental first round picks). The first nine, in order of appearance, were Austin Kearns, Ty Howington, David Espinosa, Chris Gruler, Homer Bailey, Jay Bruce, Drew Stubbs, Devin Mesoraco, and Stephenson.

Travieso was rated as the #6 prospect in the Reds organization following the 2012 season by Baseball America. He has spent all of 2013 in extended spring training after compiling 21 innings in the Reds organization in 2012 after turning professional. Travieso helped his high school team to its third straight Florida 6A state championship in 2012.

Bender appeared in six games for the Dragons earlier this season before being sent to Goodyear. With Dayton, Bender was 0-1 with a 6.16 earned run average. Salter appeared in four games with the Dragons, going 0-1 with a 17.36 ERA.

Romano was struck on the foot by a line drive on Wednesday night and left the game immediately. He is expected to miss at least one start.

The Dragons host the Lake County Captains tonight at Fifth Third Field in Dayton in game one of a four-game series. For lawn tickets or group ticket information, call (937) 228-2287.
