June 1, 2013

PEARL, MS  --  The Mississippi Braves defeated the Montgomery Biscuits 6-1 in the series finale at Trustmark Park to avoid the sweep and break a six-game losing skid. The M-Braves start a five-game series at Chattanooga Sunday and return to Trustmark Park for a five-game series against Pensacola next Friday at 7:00 PM.

Mississippi (30-25) scored six runs on six hits while Montgomery (28-27) plated its only run on five hits. The Biscuits also committed three errors. Dan Brewer lead the M-Braves with two hits at the plate.

The M-Braves took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Barrett Kleinknecht walked, took second on a ground out to first and moved to third on an errant throw from the first baseman. Edward Salcedo followed with a walk and promptly swiped second. After Kleinknecht was cut down at home on Jose Martinez's fielder's choice, Jaime Pedroza delivered a RBI-single to center. Dan Brewer followed with another single, scoring Martinez.

Phil Gosselin was hit by a pitch to start the fifth. Christian Bethancourt singled to put runners at the corners before Christian Marrero delivered a sacrifice fly to deep right-center, extending the M-Braves lead to 3-0.

Mississippi loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Bethancourt followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Dan Brewer and make it 4-0. An error by the centerfielder on the throw allowed runners to advance to second and third. The catcher then airmailed the throw to third, allowing Nunez to score and make it a 5-0 game. Gosselin advanced to third on a balk before scoring on Kleinknecht's singled to short.

Montgomery got on the board in the eighth. Mikie Mahtook reached on a force out then took second on a wild pitch. Cameron Seitzer followed with a single to left field, driving in Mahtook and making it a 6-1 game.

Aaron Northcraft (2-2) tossed six innings for the M-Braves. He limited Montgomery to two hits and two walks while striking out two batters. Victor Mateo (2-6) worked five innings for the Biscuits, giving up three earned runs on three hits and four walks.

The M-Braves travel to Chattanooga for a five-game series against the Lookouts. In game one of the series, Braves right-hander Cody Martin (2-3, 3.02) counters Lookouts right-hander Steve Smith (0-0, 8.31). First pitch is set for 4:15 PM CST.
