Rainiers Top Sacramento, 5-3

June 1, 2013

TACOMA, Wash. - Brad Miller's go-ahead triple in the seventh inning keyed the Tacoma Rainiers to a 5-3 series-opening win over the Sacramento River Cats at Cheney Stadium on Saturday night.

Miller's first career Triple-A triple went to deep centerfield with one out and broke open a 3-3 tie after scoring outfielder Eric Thames from second base. Abraham Almonte drove in Miller with a bunt single one at-bat later.

Tacoma trailed by as much as 3-0 until a throwing error on an attempt to field a single hit by Dustin Ackley allowed a pair of Rainiers runs to score in the third. Ackley was responsible for driving in the tying run when he scored Thames on a force out in the fifth.

The Rainiers combined to collect eight hits in the contest, with Miller, Thames and Almonte each turning in 2-for-3 efforts. Almonte has hit safely in each of the 11 games he has had a plate appearance with Tacoma this season, and Miller extended his hitting streak to four games.

Right-handed reliever Brian Sweeney (7-1) collected his team-leading seventh win of the season after striking out four River Cats over 3.0 scoreless innings. Logan Bawcom tossed a shutout frame in the ninth to notch his team-leading tenth save of 2013.

Starter James Paxton limited the River Cats to three runs, two earned, on five hits over 5.0 innings. The left-hander fanned two and walked two in his 11th start for the Rainiers this season.

The Rainiers (35-22) host the second game of the club's four-game series with the River Cats (31-25) at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow, June 2. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (0-0,-.--) is slated to make his 2013 Rainiers debut against Sacramento right-hander Bruce Billings (6-2, 4.78).
