Dustin Geiger named player of the month

After a tremendous May, Dustin Geiger was named Chicago Cubs organizational player of the month.

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Chicago Cubs announced, Monday, that Daytona Cubs infielder Dustin Geiger was named the organization's minor league player of the month for May.

Geiger, 21, batted .307 (31-for-101) with three home runs, eight doubles, one triple and 23 RBIs in 27 games in May. He drew 11 walks and recorded a .495 slugging percentage. His 23 RBIs ranked tied for third-most in the Florida State League over that span, while his eight doubles ranked sixth and his 31 hits were tied for seventh.

The Merritt Island, FL native was named the Florida State League's Player of the Week for May 13-19. Over that span, Geiger hit .469 (15-for-32) with two home runs, seven doubles, a triple and seven RBIs in eight games.

Overall this season, Geiger is hitting .310 (61-for-197) with six home runs, 15 doubles, one triple, and 47 RBIs in 53 games. His 47 RBIs rank second in the league, (one behind Fort Myers Miracle first baseman Kennys Vargas), his batting average is seventh-best in the league, while his 61 hits lead the Daytona Cubs. Geiger is hitting .377 with runners in scoring position (23-for-61), he has drawn 21 walks, sports a .377 on-base percentage and owns a .357 batting average (15-for-42) against left-handed pitching. Additionally, Geiger has a .998 fielding percentage (1 E/429 TC) in 45 games at first base.

Geiger was selected by the Cubs in the 24th round of the 2010 draft.

Double-A Tennessee Smokies pitcher Kyle Hendricks was named the organization's minor league pitcher of the month for May. Hendricks went 4-1 with a 1.95 ERA over 32.1 innings pitched.
