Where Are They Now: Devern Hansack

January 18, 2009
TROY, N.Y. -- Devern Hansack had a different route to the Major Leagues than most. After signing with the Astros in 1999 as a non-drafted free agent, he became a member of the inaugural ValleyCats squad in 2002.

Hansack appeared in 12 games for the ValleyCats during the 2002 season, compiling a 3-4 record with a 3.60 ERA. Opposing hitters struggled against the right-handed Hansack, hitting just .240.

Hansack's last season with the Houston Astros organization was 2003 where he ranked third in wins (10) and fourth in games started (16) at Class A Lexington. Hansack finished strong with the Legends with a 7-1 record to close the season. The Astros released the versatile pitcher following the season and Hansack returned to his native country of Nicaragua to play for the Nicaraguan National Team for two years.

The Boston Red Sox took notice of Hansack and signed the right-handed. The right-hander joined the organization and earned Pitcher of the Year honors while at Double A Portland during the 2006 season. Hansack made his major league debut on September 23, 2006 and earned a 1-1 record in two starts with the Red Sox. On the final day of the 2006 season, Hansack tossed a rain-shortened, give-inning, no-hit complete game win against the Balitmore Orioles.

Hansack spent much of the 2007 season at Triple A Pawtucket, compiling a record of 10-7 with a 3.61 ERA. At the Major League level, Hansack appeared three times, in relief twice and starting once.

The 2008 season saw Hansack starting 25 games at Triple A Pawtucket before earning another September call-up to the Red Sox. In the minors, Hansack recorded 128 strikeouts in 139 innings pitched and tossed two complete games. Hansack appeared in four games for the Red Sox, earning his lone victory on the season finale against the New York Yankees. Hansack tossed a perfect inning in relief to close out another season.
