Hot-ticket items on tap for Silent Auction

Autographs abound for 14-annual Hot Stove's fundraiser
January 22, 2009
WOODBRIDGE, Va.- This year the Potomac Nationals received donations for the 14th-annual Hot Stove Banquet and Silent Auction from over 80 minor league and major league baseball teams, NFL, NBA and NHL organizations and various Potomac Nationals' sponsors. All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington.

Big-name autographs will highlight the top items up for bid. A Tony Dungy autographed hard hat is sure to be an instant collector's item given the NFL head coach's recent retirement from the Indianapolis Colts on January 12. The first and only African-American head coach ever to win a Super Bowl title, Dungy spent 13 years as a head coach in the NFL including seven seasons with Colts and six with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 53-year-old ended his coaching career with 148 wins, 19th-best all-time, including a 29-17 win over the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.

Other valuable autographed items include a Cal Ripken Jr. Gift Pack featuring the Hall of Famer's signature on a 1987 Donruss "Diamond Kings" card, as well as a Frederick Keys playbill signed by super-prospect Matt Wieters. A 1988 San Diego Padres team-signed bat and a Washington Capitals team-signed hockey stick including NHL star Alex Ovechkin will also be up for grabs. The P-Nats will also be auctioning away unique experiences including being GM for a day, broadcaster for an inning, and grounds crew member for a day.

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington will be the recipient of the proceeds from the silent auction. Last year the Potomac Nationals annual Hot Stove event raised nearly $3,800 for the American Cancer Society.

"With over 3,700 clubs serving over 4.4 million young people, the national partnership between Major League Baseball and Boys & Girls Clubs has given countless number children the opportunity to realize their dreams both on and off the field," said Acting Area Director of the Boys and Girls Club April Chervenka. "On a local level, the partnership between the Potomac Nationals and the Prince William County Boys and Girls Clubs has benefited three clubs serving over 3,500 youth. With partnerships such as the one with the Potomac Nationals, the Boys and Girls Clubs can provide excellent services to the youth of Prince William County at minimal cost."

The Potomac Nationals 14th-annual Hot Stove Banquet and Silent Auction will begin with a cocktail hour from 5:30 to 6:30pm. The program featuring Frank Howard and seated dinner will begin at 6:30 with the evening's events scheduled to end at approximately 8:00.

Season tickets and ticket packages for the 2009 season are on sale now. The Potomac Nationals offer a variety of different ticket packages ranging from "The Weekender" - a 34-game package featuring all Friday, Saturday, and Sunday games along with Opening Day and Labor Day - to six-game packages.
