Azuaje added to Clinton staff

January 23, 2009
The Clinton LumberKings, in conjuction with the Seattle Mariners, announced the addition of coach Jesus Azuaje to the field staff for 2009.

Azuaje, a coach with Seattle's rookie affiliate in Pulaski last year, takes over the spot vacated by Eddie Menchaca. Menchaca will fill a similar post with short-season Everett.

Azuaje begins his third season as a coach in the Mariners' system after instructing Seattle's Venezuelan Summer League team in 2007 and Pulaski in 2008. Originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as a non-drafted free agent in 1991, Azuaje spent time in the minor-league systems of the New York Mets (1995-1998), the Milwaukee Brewers (1999) and the Detroit Tigers (2000). He brings a wealth of coaching experience to Clinton, having served 17 seasons as a coach for the Cardenales de Lara of the Venezuelan Winter League.

A native of Cabudare Edo, Lara, Venezuela, Azuaje joins manager Scott Steinmann, pitching coach Lance Painter and trainer Eduardo Tamez on the Clinton field staff for the upcoming season.

The LumberKings open their 2009 campaign on the road against the Burlington Bees on Thursday, April 9th. The home opener at Alliant Energy Field is scheduled for Monday, April 13th at 6:30 PM against the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
