Where Are They Now: Edwin Maysonet
After playing college baseball at Delta State, Maysonet was selected by Houston in the 19th round of the 2003 Amateur Draft. The infielder began his professional baseball career that summer with Tri-City, hitting .275 over 45 games.
The following season, the Puerto Rico native spent time with the Lexington Legends where he led his team in triples and was named Defensive Player of the Month for June. In 2005, Maysonet split his time between Lexington and Salem. In 2006 with Salem, Maysonet pounded out 21 steals, 32 doubles, and 58 runs scored.
In 2007, Maysonet continued his ascent towards the major leagues with the Class AA Corpus Christi Hooks. Maysonet shined defensively, being named Corpus Christi's Defensive Player of the Month in both June and July. For Round Rock in 2008, Maysonet continued to succeed, compiling 59 hits and 24 doubles before being called up to the Astros.
On Wednesday, September 17, Astros manager Cecil Cooper sent Edwin Maysonet to the plate in the top of the seventh inning to hit for pitcher Fernando Nieve. Maysonet had been 0-2 in his short major league career before Wednesday. Maysonet responded to Cooper's call and singled to left field on a 2-2 Nolasco pitch, the first hit of his Major League career.
