Casilla called up, Tolleson to Wings

May 30, 2009
The Minnesota Twins announced after Friday's game that they have placed infielder Nick Punto on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 28) with a right groin strain. To replace Punto on the 25-man roster, the Twins have recalled infielder Alexi Casilla from Triple-A Rochester.

Double-A New Britain Rock Cats infieder Steven Tolleson was promoted to Rochester and will join the club Saturday in Lehigh Valley. The University of South Carolina product had been hitting .258 with 21 runs, 10 doubles, two home runs, and 13 RBi in 38 games with the Rock Cats. He had gotten off to a slow start in 2009, but had heated up at the plate as of late. In the last 10 games, he hit .400 (16-for-40) and scored 10 runs.

Tolleson, the son of former big leaguer Wayne Tolleson, represented the Rock Cats in the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Game. He also played for Wings manager Stan Cliburn's 2008 Arizona Fall League champs.

Since being optioned on May 6, Casilla hit .316 (25-for-79) with three triples, eight rbi, five walks and six stolen bases while making 20 starts at second base for the Rochester Red Wings. Casilla, 24, made the Twins Opening Day roster and hit .167 (14-for-84) with one double, one triple and four rbi in 24 games with the Twins. Casilla, who was acquired from the Angels prior to the 2006 season, is expected to be in Tampa Bay for Saturday's game and be wearing uniform #25.
