Suns Finish First Half Monday
The Suns look to finish the first half of their season on a high note this afternoon as they face the Montgomery Biscuits in a rubber match at 12:05 p.m. at Bragan Field.
It's Camp Day at the Baseball Grounds, with all area camps invited to come out and support the Suns during the special Monday afternoon start time.
Montgomery has won each of the past two meetings in the series to force today's rubber match, including a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon. Both teams will finish the first half of their seasons in this contest before an off day Tuesday to mark the middle point of the Southern League season.
Right-hander Robert Morey (2-3, 4.55 ERA) is slated to take the hill for the Suns in the series finale Monday. The 24-year-old looks to bounce back after suffering the loss in his most recent outing on June 11 at Birmingham after allowing eight earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Morey is expected to be opposed by right-hander Jake Floethe (0-1, 8.00 ERA) this afternoon. The California native did not factor in the decision in his last start on June 7 against Huntsville after yielding three earned runs on five hits, adding six strikeouts in five frames pitched.
Fans can listen to the game on the Suns Baseball Network, with the "Voice of the Suns" Roger Hoover entering his second season as Jacksonville's Director of Broadcasting. Hoover is assisted by Matt Leland and Andrew Green. Leland and Green will host the UF Health Suns Pregame Show beginning at 11:50 a.m. ET on the Suns Baseball Network.
Below are more notes on today's game, direct from the official Suns game notes compiled by Roger Hoover. The entire game notes for today's contest can be viewed by clicking here.
End of the First Half: The Jacksonville Suns and Montgomery Biscuits meet today in the final game of the first half of the 2013 season. Regardless of today's result, both clubs will finish the first half with a winning record. The Suns will only play 67 games this half, due to rain cancellations in early May in Jackson, as well as a rain-cancelled contest in Jacksonville against the Mobile BayBears earlier this month. The second half of the season will begin on Wednesday June 19, with the Suns hosting the Huntsville Stars for a five-game series at Bragan Field.
Like a Rolling Stone: How does it feel? For Mark Canha the last three games have felt great at the plate, hitting solo homers in two contests for the Jacksonville Suns, and yesterday kickstarting the offense with a double. In the first two games he's started the Suns' scoring with a homer, Saturday hitting a solo homer over the left centerfield wall that gave the Suns a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Canha is hitting .345 with two homers and four RBI over his last 10 games and the month of June, improvements from a month of May where he hit .200 with only one homer and three RBI.
Jensen's June: The sixth month of the year may be Kyle Jensen's favorite. Jensen, who earlier in the week was named the Southern League Hitter of the Week, is hitting .269 (14-52) with seven homers and nine RBI in 14 June contests. Jensen has hit six homers in his last 12 games played, and the homer surge has him leading the Southern League in homers with 14 in 2013. Jensen was also named Southern League Hitter of the Week a week ago for his efforts at the plate from June 3-9, a stretch that included homers in four consecutive games for the slugger. Jensen is in his third season in a Suns uniform, and while with the Suns he has hit 43 homers in his Jacksonville career.
