Urena Tosses Seven Shutout in 2-0 Win
JUPITER, Fla. - RHP Jose Urena stymied Bradenton's bats over seven scoreless innings in Jupiter's 2-0 win Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
Pitching for the first time in seven days, Urena scattered four hits in his second consecutive seven-inning outing, inducing nine groundouts, striking out five and walking none. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound right-hander from the Dominican Republic threw 55 of 79 pitches for strikes (70 percent), while topping out at 94 mph on the stadium radar gun.
Monday night marked the sixth time this season that Urena has pitched at least six innings and allowed one earned run or fewer. He's allowed just one earned run over his last three starts (20 innings), lowering his season ERA to 3.67. Urena now leads the team in wins (seven), innings (73.2) and is second in strikeouts (52).
RHP Pete Andrelczyk pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up his first save of the season. The 6-foot right-hander hasn't allowed a run in three of his four outings with Jupiter.
The Hammerheads pounded-out 11 hits-10 singles-in the win, all but one of them coming from the fifth through ninth hitters. Catcher Wilfredo Gimenez led the way with three hits, including an RBI single in the second inning and an RBI double in the sixth, providing all the scoring his battery mate would need.
Alex Burg (2-for-3, two runs, walk), Ryan Goetz (2-for-4) and Josh Adams (2-for-2, walk) accounted for the rest of the production near the bottom of the lineup.
Outfielder Isaac Galloway-who leads the Hammerheads in many offensive categories-took a ball to the ear hole while stealing second base in the seventh inning. He left the game immediate-eventually walking off the field-and was replaced by Rodrigo Vigil, who was added to the roster just hours before the game.
Jupiter hit 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position Monday night, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. They stranded 14 base runners overall.
Monday night's two-run win marked the fifth straight two-run game for the Hammerheads. Dating back to June 5, tonight was the eighth game in their last nine that has been decided by two runs or less.
Junior Sosa clubbed the Marauders' only extra-base hit of the game, a triple to left-center that led off the eighth inning.
Alen Hanson stole his team-leading 19th base of the season for Bradenton, while teammate Dan Gamache snatched his seventh. The Marauders entered play Monday night with 104 stolen bases-22 more than any other team in the Florida State League.
RHP Adrian Sampson pitched six innings for Bradenton, striking out five and walking none. He was charged with nine hits and two earned runs, his third consecutive quality start.
The Hammerheads will look to clinch the series win Tuesday night with Major League rehabber Henderson Alvarez (0-0, 0.00) on the mound. Alvarez pitched five scoreless four-hit innings in his first rehab start with Jupiter last Thursday at Brevard County.
The Marauders will counter with LHP Zack Dodson (1-4, 5.23), who has given up 13 earned runs in his last three starts (12.2 innings).
