June 21, 2013

The first-place Tacoma Rainiers added another top-ranked arm to their pitching arsenal after prospect Taijuan Walker was promoted from Double-A Jackson on Friday. The Mariners have announced the 20-year-old right-hander will make his Triple-A debut at Cheney Stadium this Tuesday, June 25 in a start against the Fresno Grizzlies.

Walker joins the Rainiers rotation ranked seventh in the Southern League with a 2.46 ERA (23ERx84.0IP) through 14 starts with Jackson this season. He leads the SL with 96 strikeouts and sits third in both opponent batting average (.195, 58x298) and innings pitched (84.0).

In his final start with the Generals, the Shreveport, LA native struck out a season-high 12 batters in a win against Mobile on June 20, and he produced a 1.97 ERA (7ERx32.0IP)over his final five turns in Jackson's rotation.

Originally drafted by the Mariners as the 43rd overall pick in the supplemental first round of the 2010 draft, Walker entered the 2013 season ranked by Baseball Prospectus as the No. 1 prospect in Seattle's farm system. He was listed by Baseball America as the Mariners No.2 farmhand, and was ranked by MLB.com as the No. 2 right-handed pitching prospect in the minors.

Walker's Triple-A debut on Tuesday further highlights an 11-game homestand for the Rainiers that gets underway at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 22nd. Cheney Stadium is slated to host specialty nights such as Thirsty Thursday (June 27) and Friday Night Fireworks (June 28) before wrapping up the homestand with the team's annual July 3rd Celebration.
