Preview: Chattanooga Lookouts

The Lookouts and Smokies find themselves at the bottom of the league standings
June 4, 2009

Your Tennessee Smokies look to get back on track at Smokies Park as they take on in-state rivals, the Chattanooga Lookouts. Through June 3, the Lookouts own a 22-31 record and are in fourth place in the Southern League's North Division. This series will mark the first time that the Smokies have played at home since their rough 14-game at the end of May, one that saw opponents take 11 of 14 games.

But don't pay too much attention to the Lookouts' record, they are one of the most talented teams in the Southern League. According to Baseball America, the Lookouts have four of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 10 top prospects including Andrew Lando, their top prospect. The 6'3'', 190-pound California native is currently hitting at a .267 clip with four home runs and 16 RBIs.

Another top prospect for Chattanooga at the plate is Josh Bell. The hard-hitting third baseman is hitting .288 and is a run-producing machine with 28 RBIs on the season.

The Lookouts pitching staff also has two more top prospects according to Baseball America in Josh Lindblom (#4) and Scott Elbert (#6). Lindblom has recorded 33 strikeouts in just 37.2 innings pitched, while racking up a 4.78 ERA and a win-loss record of 2-3. Elbert, who has been compared to Scott Kazmir, routinely throws 95 mph and has recorded 49 strikeouts in 39.2 innings. Elbert has also thrown 6.1 innings for the Dodgers this season and struck out six during the short stint.

Two other Lookouts that the Smokies must "lookout" for are Francisco Felix and Gabriel Martinez. Felix is another member of Chattanooga's impressive pitching rotation. He has won three games on the season while recording an ERA of 2.43. Martinez is the Lookouts dangerous first baseman. He has been terrorizing Southern League pitching this year to a tune of seven homeruns and 31 RBIs.

Probable starting line-ups to be determined close to the start of Game 1. Stay tuned!
