Cubs Losing Streak Reaches Six
The Cubs broke a streak of 19 consecutive scoreless innings on offense with a run in the top of the first inning. Sam Fuld led off with an infield hit, went to second on a groundout, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Doug Deeds. The Cubs extended that lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Kyle Reynolds connected on a solo home run off Sounds' starter Josh Butler. It was Reynolds' first Triple-A home run and the first homer by a Cubs' position player in 16 games.
The Sounds answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs off starter Jeff Samardzija to tie the game. Adam Heether led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Cole Gillespie. After a strikeout, Erick Almonte delivered a pinch-hit single to drive in the first run. Jason Bourgeois followed with a base hit to bring in Gillespie with the tying run.
The Sounds took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Samardzija walked Joe Koshansky to start the game before Katin launched his first home run just inside the foul pole in left to put the Sounds up 4-2. Katin hit his second home run off reliever James Russell in the seventh inning for the Sounds final run. Katin has hit two home runs in three of his last six games and is the fifth player to have a multi-homer game against the Cubs this season.
Butler struck out six batters in four innings but didn't figure in the decision for the Sounds. Lefty Chris Narveson (2-3) pitched four shutout innings in relief and picked up the win. David Johnson finished the ninth inning and earned his second save. Samardzija (2-2) allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings and suffered the loss. Katin's second home run was the only run allowed by Russell in two innings of work. Neal Cotts pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game for the Cubs.
The Cubs and Sounds will complete this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Greer Stadium. RH Kevin Hart (0-3, 3.93) will start for the Cubs against left-hander Chris Cody, making his Triple-A debut for the Sounds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
