Halladay and Lowe set for pitcher's duel

Staff aces face off when Jays host Braves on Saturday
February 26, 2009
Two of baseball's best will get their first taste of Spring Training action when Toronto's Roy Halladay and Atlanta's Derek Lowe square off in a Spring Training matchup of staff aces this Saturday, February 28 as the Blue Jays and Braves play in their only Spring Training matchup at Dunedin Stadium this season.

2008 was great for Halladay, as he is coming off his second 20-win season in his storied Blue Jays career. He continued to show off his amazing durability, topping 220 innings pitched for the third consecutive season with 246, the most in all of baseball. He also led the American League with 9 complete games and finished second in the Cy Young Award voting behind Cleveland's Cliff Lee.

Lowe is still going strong at the age of 35 and was a key component of a pitching staff that pushed the Los Angeles Dodgers to the National League West championship, as he threw 211 innings last year and tied a career-high with 147 strikeouts. He signed as a free agent with the Braves back on January 13 and is looked to be the steady force in a rebuilt pitching staff in Atlanta.

Both pitchers are known for their efficiency on the mound, but both do it in their own way. While Halladay's precision and control have made him one of baseball's best pitchers, Lowe attacks the batter with a sinking fastball that has produced more than its fair share of ground balls over the years. Both pitchers also work quickly on the mound, making the batter uncomfortable in the batter's box and speeding up the game in the process.

First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. Neither pitcher is expected to stay in the game for too long on Saturday, but fans at Dunedin Stadium will be in for a real treat watching two of the game's best go at it in each pitcher's first start of the 2009 Spring Training season.

Tickets for this game range from $18-$25. They are available by calling the Blue Jays Ticket Office at (727) 738-0429 or by visiting www.DunedinBlueJays.com. The Ticket Office is now open seven days a week: Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
