Murphy and Darnell Win Weekly Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of June 17th through June 23rd:

Reading Fightin Phils first baseman Jim Murphy has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 17th-June 23rd. The 27-year old batted .435 (10-for-23) with four home runs, nine RBI, six runs scored, four walks and a .957 slugging percentage in seven games last week. Murphy, who is a native of Kirkland, Washington, had at least one hit in five of the seven games he played in last week and had three multiple hit games, including going 4-for-4 with a pair of homers, four RBI and three runs scored in a 9-8 win over Portland on Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. The 6'4", 240 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in RBI (9) last week and also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in home runs (4-tied 1st), slugging percentage (.957-2nd), OPS (1.457-2nd), total bases (22-2nd), runs scored (6-tied 3rd), on-base percentage (.500-tied 3rd), extra-base hits (4-tied 4th), hits (10-tied 4th), batting average (.435-5th) and walks (4-tied 9th). Jim, who is hitting .301 in 72 games for the Fightin Phils this season and currently leads the league in home runs (15) and total bases (144), was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 17th round of the 2006 draft after batting .361 during his senior season at Washington State University.

Logan Darnell, a left-handed starting pitcher for the New Britain Rock Cats, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 17th-June 23rd. The 6'2", 210 lb. hurler started one game for the Rock Cats last week and had a record of 1-0 with nine strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Logan, who is a native of Joelton, Tennessee, made his lone start of the week on Thursday afternoon at Erie and threw his first career complete game in a 2-0 victory for the Rock Cats. Darnell scattered four hits and one walk while striking out nine batters to earn his sixth win of the season. The 24-year old tied for the league lead in ERA (0.00), complete games (1) and shutouts (1) last week and also ranked among the weekly league leaders in WHIP (0.56-2nd), wins (1-tied 2nd), batting average against (.143-7th) and strikeouts (9-tied 9th). Darnell has record of 6-6 with 77 strikeouts and a 2.61 ERA in a league-high 96.2 innings of work for the Rock Cats this season. Logan, who received a promotion today from New Britain to the Rochester Red Wings of the Triple-A International League, was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the sixth round of the 2010 draft out of the University of Kentucky.
