Paxton Named PCL Pitcher of the Week
TACOMA, Wash. - Tacoma Rainiers left-hander James Paxton has been named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for June 17-23, the league office announced today.
Paxton started two games for the Rainiers over that period, combining to go 1-0 and striking out 16 batters through 12 innings. He limited Sacramento to one unearned run on four hits and fanned five in a win on the road, June 17. In his next outing, Paxton struck out a season-high 11 batters over six shutout innings at home against Fresno on June 22.
The 24-year-old is 4-5 with a 4.75 ERA (38x72.0IP) over 15 starts at Tacoma in his first Triple-A season. He ranks tied for seventh in the league with 76 strikeouts and boasts a rate of 9.50 strikeouts per nine innings pitched with the Rainiers.
A native of Richmond, British Columbia, Paxton was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round of the 2010 draft out of the University of Kentucky. He is 20-14 with a 3.31 ERA and 335 strikeouts over 57 starts since making his professional debut in 2010.
Paxton is the fourth Rainiers player to receive a weekly league award this season and the third to nab Pitcher of the Week honors. Right-handers Andrew Carraway (April 22-29) and Jeremy Bonderman (April 29-May 6) and infielder Nick Franklin (April 22-29) were each recognized by the PCL after producing outstanding weeks earlier this year.
At 45-33, the Rainiers are tied for the best record in the league entering play today. The club currently owns a 2.5-game lead over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox for first place in the PCL Pacific Northern Division.
Tacoma continues their 11-game homestand at 7 p.m. tonight when they host the third game of a four-game set against the Fresno Grizzlies. Right-hander Brandon Maurer is slated to start for the Rainiers against Fresno's right-hander Fabio Castillo. Mariners top pitching prospect Taijuan Walker is scheduled to make his Triple-A debut in the series finale at 7 p.m. tomorrow, June 25.
