Pedroza Cycles into Record Book

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - An offensive explosion highlighted by the first cycle in Great Lakes Loons history delivered an emphatic 16-4 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps in the final game of a four-game series at Fifth Third Ballpark Friday night. Loons' second baseman Jaime Pedroza had a homer, triple, double and single for the first cycle in team history as the Loons pounded out 20 hits and batted around twice in the game. Matt Wallach also recorded a four-hit game for the Loons with three singles and a double.

Pedroza opened his historic night with a two-run homer off Whitecaps starter Luke Putkonen in the top of the first inning. Two batters into the game, the Loons had a lead they would never relinquish on the night. After the teams traded runs in the bottom of the first and top of the second innings, Pedroza stretched the Loons lead to 4-1, scoring on a wild pitch after a leadoff triple in the top of the third inning.

The Whitecaps made it a one-run game with a pair in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Luis Salas and an RBI single by Ronnie Bourquin, then both starters, Putkonen and Loons right-hander Josh Walter worked a scoreless fourth inning before Pedroza and the Loons broke the game open in the fifth.

Dee Gordon led off the inning with a single, the first of eight straight Loons batters to reach base in the frame. Pedroza followed with his third hit, a bunt single down the third-base line, then he and Gordon moved into scoring position on a Putkonen wild pitch. The next man to bat, Anthony Hatch, chopped a slow bouncer to 'Caps second baseman Brandon Douglas, whose throw to the plate was too late to nip Gordon. Kyle Russell added an RBI single and Nick Buss notched a two-run single. The Loons' fifth run of the inning was platted on the first of two run-scoring balks charged to reliever Luis Sanz.

The Loons batted around a second time in the seventh, also scoring five in the inning.

Geison Aguasviva (2-0) recorded his second straight win in relief of Walter with four scoreless frames.
