All-Star Futures Game rosters revealed

Fifty-two top prospects in baseball to compete in New York
June 26, 2013

Center stage at the Midsummer Classic will belong to stars like Miguel Cabrera, David Wright, Yadier Molina and Justin Verlander. Some other guys, however, are on deck.

The game's brightest prospects will show off their talents on Sunday July 14 in the 15th annual All-Star Futures Game, with the U.S once again taking on the World. The rosters for both teams were announced Wednesday by Major League Baseball, with input from the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League clubs.

Several players from last year's game in Kansas City have already made an impact in the Major Leagues, including Milwaukee's Jean Segura, Baltimore's Manny Machado and Miami's Jose Fernandez.

Ninety-nine players have competed in both the All-Star Futures Game and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. In 2012, 30 Major League All-Stars were alumni of the Futures Game. Nine players -- Jose Altuve, Adam Dunn, Neftali Feliz, Jason Heyward, Bryce Harper, Francisco Liriano, Evan Longoria, Ben Sheets and Geovany Soto -- appeared in the Futures Game and were named to the All-Star Game in the following season.

This year's rosters feature 11 first-round Draft picks and five players just 19 years old: Joey Gallo (Rangers), Addison Russell (Athletics) and Byron Buxton (Twins) for the U.S. team, managed by Mookie Wilson, and Dilson Herrera (Pirates) and Francisco Lindor (Indians) for Edgardo Alfonzo's World squad.

Thirteen of the World's 25 players hail from the Dominican Republic, with Cuba and Puerto Rico contributing two apiece and one player each coming from Taiwan, Brazil, Venezuela, Columbia, Panama and Aruba. For the Americans, California and Florida are best represented with four players each.

One spot remains open on each roster. For the first time, fans will determine the final player on both the U.S. and World Team rosters by casting their votes in the All-Star Sunday Futures Finalists (#FuturesFinalists) ballot. Tyler Austin (Yankees), Nick Castellanos (Tigers), Garin Cecchini (Red Sox), Courtney Hawkins (White Sox) and Brandon Nimmo (Mets) are the candidates for the U.S. team and Javier Baez (Cubs), Ji-Man Choi (Mariners), Carlos Correa (Astros), Renato Nunez (Athletics) and Rougned Odor (Rangers) eligible for the World squad.

A number of Minor League managers and coaches will fill out the field staffs for both Futures Game teams. Coaches Dean Treanor (Indianapolis), Howard Johnson (Tacoma), Chris Cron (Erie), Keith Bodie (Corpus Christi), Andy Green (Mobile) and Brad Holman (Round Rock) will help guide the U.S. squad while Charlie Montoyo (Durham), Steve Scarsone (Sacramento), Pedro Lopez (Binghamton), Julio Vinas (Birmingham), Jacque Jones (San Antonio) and Neil Allen (Durham) will serve on the World staff.
