Spinners hand out jerseys

April 2, 2006
LOWELL, Mass. -- The Lowell Spinners, Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, continued their Yankees Elimination promotion today, handing out jerseys to the area teams that had signed up for the promotion.

In conjunction with the promotion, the Spinners held their first annual Yankees Clothing Drive, inviting former Yankees teams and fans to bring their old uniforms, hats and shirts to the ballpark.

Seventy-five Yankees uniforms, plus a handful of hats, were collected. The Yankees garb will be shipped to a homeless shelter in New York City.

"We're sending donated Yankees clothing to those in need in New York," said Spinners general manager Tim Bawmann. "It's our way of utilizing this clothing in a positive manner."

The Spinners collected another donation from an area Red Sox fan. Claudia Turcotte from Lowell donated something special to be sent to New York: a check made out to Johnny Damon for 1 cent.

"I'm sure he'll cash it because he's obviously money-hungry," said Turcotte.

The check bears the Red Sox logo and will be sent to New York along with the Yankees clothing.
