Interview with Manatees Pitching Coach Fred Dabney

March 5, 2009

Fred Dabney returns to Brevard County in 2009 for his fifth season with the Manatees. Dabney is entering his sixth season as a coach in the Brewers organization.  Fred racked up a career record of 53-47, with a 3.62 ERA during his nine-year playing career in the minor leagues.  Today we talked with Fred to learn more about coaching at the minor league level.

Fred, did you pitch more as a starter or a reliever during your playing career?

I was primarily a reliever during my career.

Do you think there are any certain positions that are better for the development of a manager/coach?

There is no certain position that is better suited for becoming a coach, but I think being around as many type of different personalities as you can will help you.

What was your favorite moment as a player?

Pitching a no-hitter in 1991 (while with the Sarasota White Sox).

How did you get into coaching?

After playing, I went to career training with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and began coaching shortly after.

What is your favorite part of coaching?

Being around the players and seeing them work on acheiving their dreams.

What is your biggest challenge as a coach?

Seeing players that do everything they can to reach their goals, but ultimately not having what it takes to reach them.

What was your best moment as a coach?

Getting to watch players that I coached pitch for the Brewers in the 2008 NLDS against the Phillies.

Is there anyone you would consider your mentor?

Reid Nichols, Bob Cluck, Grady Fuson

At this level, do you need to work with players more on their physical or mental approach on the mound?

At this point in a pitcher's development, both are equally important.

Do you ever advise pitchers to take a different approach in Space Coast Stadium due to the deep fences and windy conditions?

Occasionally, depending on the situation.

Do you think working in a traditionally pitcher-dominated league like the FSL makes your job easier or tougher?

Tougher, because lower-scoring games are expected.

What is your favorite place to go for dinner in Brevard County?

Amici's...oh yes!

What are some of your pastimes during the offseason?

Spending quality time with family and good friends, going to the beach, jet-skiing.
