Suns announce Opening Day roster

Highlighting the team is 17-year-old outfielder Fernando Martinez
April 3, 2006
The Hagerstown Suns, the 2005 South Atlantic League North Division Champions, are excited to announce the team's Opening Day roster to open the season. The Suns play an exhibition game at Municipal Stadium tomorrow, Tuesday, April 4th, vs. the HCC Hawks before beginning the 2006 regular season campaign at Greensboro. The team returns to Hagerstown on April 10th for their home opener.

The New York Mets, the Suns' parent club, have sent their South Atlantic League (SAL) affiliate division championship teams each of the last two seasons. In fact, the Mets' SAL affiliate has posted winning records for four straight years and eight of the last ten. Yet again, this squad is loaded with many of the Mets' top prospects.

Highlighting the team is 17-year-old outfielder Fernando Martinez. The Dominican Republic native signed a $1.4 million agreement last summer as a 16-year old and is set to play his first professional game with Hagerstown. In addition to Martinez, the Suns roster will have 7 other members age 20 or younger. Last year's squad only featured two players under twenty.

In addition to being a youthful roster, the team has a distinct international appeal with 12 of the players being foreign-born, mostly from the Dominican Republic. The Suns return just four members from last season's championship team: RHP Jeff Landing, RHP Brandon Nall, RHP Joe Serfass and C Rafael Arroyo.

The Hagerstown Suns, of the South Atlantic League, are the Class A affiliate of the New York Mets. Individual game tickets, ticket packages and sponsorships are all available by calling 301-791-6266. The Suns are owned by Los Angeles based Mandalay Baseball Properties.
