Lexington scores three in ninth to beat Hagerstown
HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (5-4, 43-33) couldn't hold a late 2-0 lead as the Lexington Legends (5-4, 38-39) rallied for three runs in the ninth en route to a 3-2 win Friday evening. The loss snapped the Suns four-game win streak at home and it's also the first loss for the Suns this season when leading after eight innings (34-1).
With the Suns ahead 2-0 in the ninth inning, the Legends scored three runs to take the lead. Shortstop Raul Mondesi started things off with a single to right field. First baseman Mark Threlkeld then tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run home run to center field. Right fielder Fred Ford then tripled to right field, and later scored on CF Bubba Starling's sacrifice fly to right field, making the score 3-2 Lexington which would end up being the final.
The score was knotted at 0-0 in the fifth when Hagerstown got on the board. Left fielder Wes Schill began the inning with a double. He advanced to third on catcher Craig Manuel's single, then scored on CF Narciso Mesa's single. After 2B Tony Renda lined into a double play, Mesa stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Legends catcher Cam Gallagher. Shortstop Stephen Perez walked, which was followed up by a single by 1B Shawn Pleffner, scoring Mesa and giving the Suns a 2-0 lead which would hold up until the ninth inning.
RHP Ali Williams (4-4) earned the win in relief for the Legends. Williams went one inning, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one. RHP Derek Self (0-1) took the loss for the Suns. Self pitched one inning, allowing three earned on four hits. RHP Mark Peterson notched his eighth save of the season, pitching one inning while allowing one walk.
The Suns and Legends will continue their series on Saturday, June 29. RHP Dixon Anderson (5-4) will get the start for Hagerstown, making his fifteenth start of the season. RHP Leonel Santiago (0-0) will take the hill for Lexington, making his second start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
