Scrappers End Cutters Winning Streak
The Crosscutters failed to record an extra base as their five-game winning streak comes to an end against the Scrappers 6-2 Saturday night.
The Scrappers took a 2-0 lead in the third. Centerfielder Tyler Booth led off with a double to left field. Booth advanced to third on a sacrifice groundout by second baseman Claudio Bautista. Shortstop Juan Herrera hit a ground ball to third that went between the legs of Zach Green and Booth scored. First baseman Nellie Rodriguez hit a double to right-centerfield and Herrera scored from first.
Mahoning Valley added a run in the fourth. Catcher Ryan Battaglia laced a double down the left field line. Battaglia scored on an RBI single by Booth.
Booth led off the Scrappers sixth with a single to right field and stole second in the process. Herrera walked and Rodriguez singled up the middle to score Booth from second. Designated hitter James Roberts laced a single to right field, Herrera scored and Mahoning Valley took a 5-0 lead.
Williamsport put themselves on the board in the seventh. Designated hitter Andrew Knapp laced a single to left field and catcher Gabriel Lino reached first base on a throwing error by Scrappers third baseman Robel Garcia. On a 3-2 count, relief pitcher James Stokes threw a wild pitch to first baseman Logan Pierce and Knapp scored. Left fielder Samuel Hiciano hit a bloop single to left field bringing Lino home from second.
The Scrappers put the game away in the ninth. Left fielder Josh McAdams hit an infield single towards first. McAdams stole second in the process. Relief pitcher Manny Martinez allowed back-to-back walks to catcher Ryan Battaglia and right fielder Bryan Ruiz to load the bases. Bautista walked on a full-count pitch to seal the deal for Mahoning Valley.
Josh Warner records the loss for Williamsport (1-2). He allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Robert Whitenack comes up with the win (1-1). Whitenack allowed no runs on five hits and two strikeouts in six innings.
