Whitecaps offense goes silent again
Jarrod Parker pitched five shutout innings as the Silver Hawks starter and allowed just three hits to earn the win and improve to 11-5. Bryan Shaw and Billy Spottiswood then combined to throw four hitless innings of relief.
The last Whitecaps hit of the game was a lead-off double by Audy Ciriaco in the fourth inning. Chris White also doubled for West Michigan - with two out in the second.
South Bend scored the only run of the game on a one out double by Taylor Harbin in the first inning. Ollie Linton scored the run following a lead-off single and a stolen base.
Thad Weber allowed one run on two hits and three walks over 5.2 innings of work but took the loss to fall to 0-3.
Kelvin Cedano kept West Michigan in the game by pitching 2.1 innings of shutout relief. It was Cedano's first outing in a week.
Prior to Thursday's victory by Lansing, the Whitecaps had not lost 1-0 since April 27, 2007 at Peoria. West Michigan has been shut out 13 times this season, which is the most since 16 shutouts in 1998.
Center fielder Kyle Peter left the game for the Whitecaps in the eighth inning after he appeared to re-aggrivate an ankle injury on a swinging strikeout.
