"Battle of the Titans" MMA event here July 13

Frontier Field will host the first-ever outdoor, amateur Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event in New York State on Saturday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00 p.m. The "Battle of the Titans - The Beginning" is a sanctioned ISKA event promoted by Jesus A. Ortiz, Jr. of Titan Promotions and Mercedes Vazquez-Simmons of Pretty Girl Productions LLC.

The main event features Rochester's own Magdiel Matias against Michael Bennett of Ithaca. Matias, 26, is expected to weigh in around 135 lb for the three-round encounter. He trains locally at Iron Sharpens Iron MMA Gym and his amateur record is 2-2 with one KO win.

"The Battle of the Titans - The Beginning" will also feature an exciting undercard which includes fighters from all over New York State, New Jersey and Illinois.

Tickets for this event range from $25-$100 and can be purchased at the Frontier Field Box Office or over the phone at (585) 423-WING (9464). A portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

"This production is the first fully sanctioned and regulated amateur MMA event in Western NY," said Simmons.

On Friday, July 12 at Frontier Field a 3:00 p.m. press conference will be held followed by a 4:00 p.m. weigh-in. Both of these events are free and open to the public.

MMA is a full contact combat sport. It allows the use of several striking and grappling techniques from standing and ground positions. A variety of styles from other combat sports are employed. Victory is usually earned by the decision of judges after an allotted amount of time has elapsed, a stoppage by the referee or fight doctor, a submission, a competitor's corner man throwing in the towel or by knockout.
