White Sox promote Dash alum Phegley

Catcher becomes 13th Dash alum to reach bigs
July 5, 2013

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 5, 2013) - For the first time in his career, Winston-Salem Dash alum Josh Phegley was promoted to the Chicago White Sox Friday morning. He is the 13th player to join a major league roster since this franchise became the Dash prior to the 2009 season.

The catcher had spent the entirety of his 2013 season with Triple-A Charlotte before getting the call, where he was hitting .316 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs. Earlier this week, Phegley was named to the 2013 Triple-A All-Star Game. He was also selected to play for the United States Team in the Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game in New York on July 14. However, if he remains in the big leagues, he will not be able to participate in either event.

In 2010, Phegley played in 25 games for Winston-Salem, hitting .292 with three home runs and 12 RBIs before earning a promotion to Double-A Birmingham near the end of the season.

The Indiana University product split 2011 between Birmingham and Charlotte before spending all of 2012 with the Knights. The former first-round supplemental draft choice joins Tyler Flowers as the two catchers on the White Sox active roster.

Phegley joins a prestigious list of Dash alums who have climbed to Major League Baseball. Chris Sale is the ace of the White Sox staff just three years after shining in Winston-Salem, while Addison Reed anchors the back end of Chicago's bullpen. Other players like Dylan Axelrod, Eduardo Escobar, Daniel Hudson and Nate Jones donned the Dash purple before reaching the majors.
