Hernandez Leads Peoria to 2-0 Shutout of Beloit

Bats Silenced as Win Streak is Snapped
July 6, 2013

PEORIA, IL - Hector Hernandez hurled five nearly spotless innings in leading the Peoria Chiefs to a 2-0 shutout of the Beloit Snappers in Midwest League action at Dozer Park on Friday  night.

This defeat ends Beloit's win streak at seven and knocks them down to 55-30 (12-3 in the second half). Peoria earns a win that puts them at 44-38 (6-9 in the second half).

Hernandez (5-3) was dominant while earning his fifth win of the year. He set down 15 of the 16 batters he faced, with Nick Rickles' (2-3, 2B) third inning double the only mark against him. Hernandez also didn't walk a batter while striking out two.

Obviously, the Chiefs' lineup didn't need to provide much support for their starter, but they quickly got him the lead off the Snappers' Seth Streich (9-5). A two out double and a walk in the bottom of the first brought up Jordan Walton (3-4, RBI), who singled to center for a quick 1-0 advantage. For good measure, Peoria tacked on a second run in the third when Jeremy Schaffer hit a sacrifice fly.

Joseph Scanio relieved Hernandez starting in the sixth and he wasn't any easier to solve for the Snappers. Scanio fired a trio of shutout innings with two strikeouts before Zach Russell came in for the ninth and retired the side in order for his first save.

On Saturday evening, game three of this series will take place, beginning at 6:30pm . The Snappers have RHP Vince Voiro (5-2, 3.06 ERA) as their scheduled starter while the Chiefs are set to go with RHP Silfredo Garcia (2-1, 5.23 ERA).
