Summers throws complete game shutout in 3-0 win over Mets

Returning from New Britain, Summers faces four over the minimum
July 7, 2013
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 7, 2013) - Starter Matt Summers tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout to lead the Fort Myers Miracle to a 3-0 win over the St. Lucie Mets at Tradition Field on Sunday afternoon.

Summers (3-4) faced just four over the minimum and allowed only one St. Lucie Met to reach second base. A fourth round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in 2011, Summers registered seven strikeouts and retired 14 in a row in a stretch from the first out of the second inning to the second out of the sixth. The start was Summers' first since returning from a three-game stint in Double-A New Britain.

The two hits allowed were the least given up by the Miracle pitching staff in a single game this season.

The Miracle scored three runs and sent nine to the plate in the first inning off Mets starter Michael Fulmer. Levi Michael led off with a single into right field. After a Lance Ray fly out, Byron Buxton poked a base hit through the right side of the infield and Michael took third. Kennys Vargas stepped up and looped a base hit into right field to score Michael.

Fulmer then hit Matt Koch to load the bases and Mike Kvasnicka drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Fulmer then struggled with his control again, walking Jhon Goncalves and Stephen Wickens. The walk to Wickens with the bases loaded pushed across another Miracle run to improve the lead to 3-0.

Fulmer (0-1) would not allow another run in four more innings and the St. Lucie bullpen held Fort Myers scoreless from the sixth through the ninth.

The Miracle (54-28, 9-6) meet the Mets (44-39, 7-9) for the series rubber match on Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Tradition Field. Fans can listen to all the action with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman on www.miraclebaseball.com and on Fox Sports Radio 1350 AM. The Square 1 Burgers & Bar pregame show begins at 6:15 p.m.
