6-2 Augusta Win is Machemer's 1,300th
It's been a long and winding road for Dave Machemer in his more than 20 years as a minor league manager but on Saturday night, he got a moment to savor. His Augusta GreenJackets picked up a 6-2 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats to earn Machemer his 1,300th career minor league managerial win.
The Jackets jumped to an early lead and never let go. Matt Klimas doubled to trade places with Charlie Culberson and scored on Ben Woodbury's single for a 2-0 second inning lead. After the Sand Gnats got a run on Jean Luc Blaquiere's solo home run in the third, Augusta answered with two more in the third on a sacrifice fly and an attempted squeeze play. With Juan Perez charging from third, Ehire Adrianza's popped up bunt was dropped by pitcher Robert Carson, scoring Perez with the fourth Augusta run and allowing Adrianza to reach safely.
Savannah answered with a Sean Ratliff single in the fourth to come to within a pair but that was as close as things would get. Aaron King struggled with command in his outing but went the required five innings to get the win. King (3-3) allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts to get his second straight win.
Augusta added a couple more in the sixth on a wild pitch and a Duggan groundball that saw the speedster reach on an error by Savannah shortstop Wilmer Flores.
Savannah starter Robert Carson (3-5) takes the loss after a five-plus inning effort, allowing five runs - four earned - on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The GreenJackets bullpen held the Sand Gnats scoreless on just two hits in the last four innings with solid work from Trey Webb for three innings and Justin Fitzgerald for the final frame. Fitzgerald struck out Josh Satin swinging to end the game and hand his manager a milestone win.
Machemer, a champion manger in 1986 with the California League's Stockton Ports and last year with the Arizona Rookie League Giants, got his 1,000th win in 2003 with the Harrisburg Senators in the Eastern League. This is his first season at the helm of the Augusta GreenJackets.
The rubber game in the series and another attempt for the GreenJackets to reach the .500 mark comes on Sunday when Ari Ronick (3-3, 3.33) toes the rubber against Kyle Allen (3-2, 4.70). First pitch from Savannah comes at 2:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Monday to open up their final homestand of the first half with a 7:05 p.m. contest with the Charleston RiverDogs. You may purchase seats by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
