No-No-No! Three Claws Combine to No-Hit Braves 1-0

July 11, 2013

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (9-12/35-53) used three pitchers and completed the fourth no-hitter in franchise history in the 1-0 victory over the Rome Braves (8-12/44-45) Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park. The win extended the clubs winning streak to a season-high five games.

The BlueClaws looked to Jeb Stefan to keep the four-game winning streak alive, and the recently converted starter did not disappoint. Stefan (3-4) took the mound and tied a career-high with six innings pitched. The righty baffled Rome's hitters over the six frames and did not allow a hit in his outing; he walked four and struck out a season-high five hitters.

Ramon Oviedo took over for the starter in the seventh and picked up right where he left off. In his first Lakewood appearance of 2013, Oviedo retired all six he faced and struck out four Braves hitters in his two innings of work.

For the ninth, Mickey Morandini called upon Chris Burgess, the 26th round pick of the 2013 June Draft to close it out and preserve the no hitter. The rookie came on and walked the leadoff man Ross Heffley to begin his outing.

From there the righty regrouped and got an out on a sacrifice bunt that moved Heffley to second and a broken bat ground out to third for the first two outs. Finally Burgess induced a ground ball to the right side that Jonathan Roof scooped up and tossed to first to complete the no-hitter.

The BlueClaws' scorching offense was held to just one run on the night and was kept off the board over the first three frames. In the fourth, Roof doubled with one out and Mitch Walding moved him to third with a single to center.

Carlos Tocci came up next and hit a sacrifice fly to right that plated Roof from third with the lone run of the game against Rome's Frank Lafreniere, who ultimately took the loss and dropped to 4-7.

Thursday's no-hitter was the fourth in BlueClaws franchise history, three of which have been wins. Keith Bucktrot completed a seven-inning no-hitter on April 12, 2001 and on August 13th, 2006, Carlos Carrasco and Andy Barb combined for a nine-inning no-hitter. The one loss in a no-hit effort came from Gavin Floyd on July 24, 2002.

The BlueClaws dismiss the Braves and get set to welcome in the Hickory Crawdads for the first and only time this season. In hopes of keeping the winning streak alive, the Claws will send RHP Severino Gonzalez (2-0, 2.35) to the hill against Hickory's LHP Luis Parra (4-1, 1.13).
