Cutters Drop Second Straight To Tigers
NORWICH, CT - - After an extra inning loss to the Connecticut Tigers, the Williamsport Crosscutters
Connecticut would get to Mitch Gueller in the bottom of the 1st inning. Gueller struck out the first batter of the inning but would surrender a one-out double to Kasey Coffman. Dominic Ficociello drew a walk to follow the double. Ben Verlander would triple to right-centerfield to drive home Coffman and Ficociello to make it 2-0 Tigers. Gueller would work out of the inning.
Connecticut threatened in the bottom of the 2nd inning getting a runner on 3rd with one out. Gueller got Austin Schotts to fly out to Gustavo Martinez. Martinez would come up firing and nab the runner Javier Azcona at the plate, Gabriel Lino applied the tag.
Tigers starter Kevin Ziomek only went two innings to match the length of his first two starts of the season. Ziomek did not allow a run on one hit. Ziomek would walk two and strikeout one.
In the top of the 3rd inning, Martinez got the offense going for the Cutters. Martinez reached on a one-out single, then stole 2nd base. Dylan Cozens would single into rightfield to score Martinez from 2nd base to make it a 2-1 deficit.
In the bottom of the 4th inning Connecticut would strike for a pair of runs off of Mitch Gueller. Gueller walked the lead-off man Patrick Leyland. Leyland took third on an error by Zach Green that put Chris Taladay on first base. Javier Azcona's sacrifice fly to left brought home Leyland to make it 3-1. Austin Schotts triple drove home Taladay to make it 4-1. Keivy Rojas came in to finish the fourth.
Williamsport would strike in the top of the 8th inning. Dylan Cozens led off with a single to center field. Cozens would be plated by Andrew Knapp who doubled to deep left-center with one out off of reliever Tanner Bailey to make it 4-2.
Connecticut added on in the bottom of the 8th inning. Patrick Leyland led off the inning reaching on an error by Jairo Cardozo. Leyland scored on a fielder's choice by Javier Acona. Azcona would score on an error by Logan Pierce to make it 6-2.
Andrew Pullin would cut into that deficit with a two out double in the top of the 9th inning that plated Logan Pierce and Gustavo Martinez to make it 6-4. The Cutters would not be able to add anymore in the frame against reliever Will LaMarche.
Cutters Carvings: Williamsport had not lost back to back games since June 20th-21st in Jamestown… Williamsport starters have factored in 14 of the 23 decisions in 2013… This was the first time Connecticut has won three games in a row this season…
