Brevard blanked in twinbill finale

JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees could only muster three hits in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Palm Beach Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium as they were blanked 1-0 and were subsequently swept in the twinbill.

Brevard County (13-10 second half, 50-40 overall) starting pitcher Jacob Barnes (6-3, 3.31 ERA) threw a six-inning complete game, but it was in a losing effort as the Cardinals (15-9, 44-48) scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

A one-out double by David Popkins and then a RBI single off the bat of Jonathan Rodriguez two batters later would plate the only run of the contest and would be all that Palm Beach would need.

Barnes yielded seven hits in his six hits of work, while walking just one and striking out two.

The 'Tees could not solve Cardinals' starting pitcher Ryan Sherriff as the southpaw held Brevard to just two hits and a walk in his 5.2 innings of work. Ronnie Shaban earned the save in the final 1.1 innings for Palm Beach.

Brandon Macias, Greg Hopkins and Lance Roenicke recorded the only Brevard County hits.

The loss marked the seventh time that the 'Tees have been shutout this season.

After an off day on Tuesday, Brevard County will open a four-game series with the St. Lucie Mets (13-10, 50-40).

The Manatees will host the first two games of the set on Wednesday and Thursday and then the series will shift to Port St. Lucie on Friday and Saturday.
