Bream, Wohlers Come to Coolray Field on July 21
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves will welcome two Atlanta Braves' legends to Coolray Field on Sunday, July 21. First baseman Sid Bream and right-hander Mark Wohlers will both be on hand for first pitches, public autographs and special meet-and-greet opportunities during the G-Braves' 5:05 PM game against the Indianapolis Indians.
Bream, originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981, signed with Atlanta as a free agent prior to the 1991 season and spent three years with the Braves from 1991 to 1993. He hit .258 with 51 doubles, 30 home runs, 141 RBIs and a .417 slugging percentage in 333 career games with the club. His most memorable moment as a Brave lives on as one of the legendary plays in franchise history. In Game 7 of the 1992 National League Championship Series against Pittsburgh, Bream scored the game-winning run on a single by Francisco Cabrera thanks to "The Slide." His feet-first slide under Pirates' catcher Mike LaValliere's tag sent the Braves to the World Series and remains Bream's signature moment.
Wohlers, the eighth-round pick of the Braves in 1988, spent parts of nine seasons with Atlanta from 1991 to 1999. The right-hander went a combined 31-22 with a 3.73 ERA and 112 saves in that span. In 1995, he first took on the closer's role and was dominant, going 7-3 with a career-best 2.09 ERA and 25 saves. His most notable save came in Game 6 of the 1995 World Series, when he recorded the final three outs to seal a 1-0 win over the Cleveland Indians and give the Atlanta Braves their first World Championship.
Both Bream and Wohlers will take part in private Meet-and-Greets sponsored by Springer Mountain Farms, as well as a two-hour public autograph session. Thirty preselected ticketholders will meet with Wohlers from 4:00 to 4:40 PM, while Bream will meet with Home Plate Club patrons from 4:00 to 4:40 PM. Both will throw out first pitches prior to the 5:05 PM game, then will sign autographs for the public (limit one item per person) from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
