Getting to Know: Catcher Shawn McGill
JL: What is your favorite baseball memory?
SM: Winning the State Championship in 2002
(Shawn McGill was named to the All-State team and was a team captain for South Kingstown High School, leading them to the Rhode Island State Championship that season)
JL: What has been your favorite ballpark to play in during your career?
SM: Pawtucket, RI (Triple-A, Red Sox), getting to play in front of family and friends.
JL: Catchers are usually considered captains of the defense or the team overall. Do you enjoy that responsibility?
SM: Yes, I have to help out 12-to-13 pitchers' careers... and I take pride in that. My main responsibility is to play defense and call a game. I want guys to want to throw to me.
JL: Were you always a catcher? What drew you to that position?
SM: When I was ten years old our little league team needed a catcher and my best friend's dad converted me. I hated it at first, but it ended up being a great move.
JL: While you're originally from Rhode Island, your first born child was born here in Lynchburg while you were playing for the Hillcats in 2011... What was it like to have such a major life event happen so far from home?
SM: I will always remember August 28, 2011 when my daughter Lyla was born here. It was difficult for the event to happen so far from home. Luckily my wife and I have great support from family, friends, teammates, coaches and others to make the birth as smooth as possible.
JL: You have spent some time in Independent baseball before working all the way back to the Triple-A level. What lessons did you take away from the Indy ball experience?
SM: I learned you can never take a day for granted in life and in baseball. Baseball is a job and we have to work at it, but we also have to love and enjoy it. If your not happy, do something else because it's important to love what you do.
