Lynx set for new season of Triple-A baseball

April 5, 2006
OTTAWA, Ont. -- The famous baseball saying goes "Time begins on Opening Day." If that's the case, then Ottawa fans can set their watches for tomorrow, April 6, as the Lynx will open their 14th season of Triple-A baseball.

Opening Day will provide a number of special features, including a chance for one lucky fan to win an all-inclusive Sunquest Vacations trip for two to the Mayan Riviera, valued at over $3,500, courtesy of Algonquin Travel Gloucester Centre. (Some terms and conditions apply.) In addition to a chance at the all-inclusive trip, the first 5,000 fans who come to the game will receive 2006 Lynx magnetic schedules courtesy of Leduc Bus Lines.

Opening Day will debut the new 2006 team, with Lynx manager Dave Trembley indicating that LHP Kurt Birkins will get the nod as the Lynx starter when Ottawa takes on the Louisville Bats at 6:05 p.m. Birkins, 25, is a native of Canoga Park, Calif., and will be making his Triple-A debut after a strong season at Double-A Bowie in 2005. The matchup for tomorrow's opener will pit Birkins vs. Louisville RHP Justin Germano.

The first homestand of the year spans eight games, including four against the Louisville Bats and four against the Indianapolis Indians.

On Saturday, April 8, at 1:05 p.m. the Lynx will host Kids Opening Day, an event that is sure to be fun for the whole family. The game will feature mascots and Star Wars characters roaming the stadium, and the first 500 fans will receive a Lynx player postcard. Doors open at noon, and after the game the kids can come down to field level and run the bases (weather permitting).

Tomorrow's home opener will also mark the debut of the Lynx Internet radio broadcasts, with the new "Voice of the Lynx" Shawn McCart calling all the exciting baseball action. Fans can tune into the broadcasts via the Lynx website at www.ottawalynx.com.
