Frey's Walk-Off Single Catapults BayBears over Jaxx
MOBILE, Ala. - Evan Frey kicked off the second half by punching out his 15th over the last seven contests, and it was a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to push the BayBears over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx 7-6 on Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
It was a seesaw battle in the second half opener with West Tenn (27-44, 0-1) reaching the early advantage thanks to four solo home runs off BayBears (38-33, 1-0) starter Matt Torra. The first two blasts came in the first inning as Ezequiel Carrera and former BayBear Colt Morton went yard.
David Espinoza took Torra deep in the second, and it was Matt Mangini's turn in the fourth to put the Jaxx up 4-1. Steve Bray had his own trouble on Monday night as the let the lead slip in the bottom of the fourth as Chris Rahl singled to spark a rally. Sean Coughlin followed with a two-run homer while Cyle Hankerd tripled and scored on a groundout by Orlando Mercado.
Rahl's two-out RBI single in the fifth brought Pedro Ciriaco to the plate to put the BayBears on top. A wild play in the sixth gave the BayBears a two-run cushion as Hankerd scored on a botched rundown that saw no one cover home plate.
West Tenn fought back with two in the seventh to tie the score at 6-6. Brent Johnson singled in Mangini to chase Torra from the contest while Carrera' sac fly against Daniel Schlereth evened the score. Schlereth was strong in the eighth as he struck out the side while Josh Ellis (2-1) surrendered two singles but no runs in the ninth.
Former first-round pick Phillipe Aumont (0-2) could only get one out in the bottom of the ninth before uncorking three successive singles including Frey's game-winner to bring Mark Hallberg home.
