July 27, 2013

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A pair of 2-run innings pushed the Kernels to a 5-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings on Saturday night.

After Kernels starter Tim Atherton retired the first six batters, the LumberKings recorded a run in the 3rd. Taylor Ard led off the frame with a single and then advanced three bases on Tim Lopes' sacrifice bunt. After getting to second, Ard raced to third as no one was covering. He then scored when first baseman Max Kepler's throw across the diamond was wide of the base at third.

In the 4th, Ard's sacrifice fly scored Marcus Littlewood to push Clinton's lead to 2-0. Littlewood led off the inning with a single.

Max Kepler put the Kernels on the board with a solo home run to lead off the 5th. The long ball is Kepler's 5th of the season.

Two innings later, the Kernels tacked on two runs to push ahead. Tyler Grimes doubled down the left field line to score Kepler, who drew a lead off walk. Jeremias Pineda then singled through the right side to score Grimes and give the Kernels a 3-2 lead.

The Kernels built a cushion in the 8th as Adam Brett Walker recorded an RBI double off the left field wall and Kepler singled to score Walker, which pushed the Kernels lead to 5-2.

Atherton exited after 6 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out eight. The eight punch-outs is a career high for the right-hander. Hudson Boyd got the victory in relief. Boyd (3-4) threw 2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits. Brian Gilbert pitched the 9th, retiring the side for his 1st save.

Clinton starter Charles Kaalekahi (4-3) left after 6.1, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out two. Reliever Blake Holovach gave up two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.
