Hot Rods announce inaugural 2009 roster
(Bowling Green, KY) - The Bowling Green Hot Rods, Class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, released the team's official roster for the start of their inaugural season. The 25-player roster contains 13 pitchers, three catchers, six infielders, and three outfielders.
The most notable player on the roster is infielder Tim Beckham. The Rays selected the now-19-year-old shortstop with the first pick of the 2008 June Draft out of Griffin High School in Georgia. After splitting his first professional season between Princeton (Rookie-Appalachian League) and Hudson Valley (Short Season A-New York-Penn League), Beckham was named the top position player prospect in the Rays minor league system by Baseball America.
Beckham is joined by his older brother Jeremy, who was a 17th round pick by the Rays out of Georgia Southern University in 2008. In addition to the two Beckhams, another 12 players from the Rays 2008 draft class begin the season in Bowling Green.
The pitching staff is led by right-hander Matt Moore, an 8th round pick from the 2007 draft out of Moriarty High School in New Mexico. Moore was rated No. 6 in the Rays farm system by Baseball America entering the season.
The team is led by manager Matt Quatraro, who was the skipper for the Rays' 2008 South Atlantic League affiliate, the Columbus Catfish. He is joined by pitching coach R.C. Lichtenstein and hitting coach Hector Torres.
